Rush Hour Concert Series: Randy McQuayApril 18, 2017, 5:30pmUNCW PresentsDo you like Blues? Then you will like Randy McQuay! Life in North Carolina and passion for music, culture, and art led Randy to be a roots musician and songwriter.
Traveling solo or with his band around the Southeast region if the U.S. since age of sixteen, he has gained chops, experience, and notoriety. He has an aggressive, soulful, and sultry voice that lures the listener into original, heartfelt lyrics. His acoustic style is derived from claw-hammer and Travis picking styles with added percussion. Like an original troubadour, he harnesses the harmonica around his neck. Adding fast and sweeping single-note lines over rhythm guitar, he creates a full band sound. His idea is to push the boundaries of coordination, playing all the parts with no compromise.
“He is a storyteller, Bluesman, and a master interpreter of modern American roots music. Randy McQuay II sings from the heart, plays guitar with abandon, and blows harmonica like he’s from another planet. He’s the recipient of the prestigious Lee Oskar Top Harmonica Player Award from The Blues Foundation, winner of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis , TN, and the reigning Cape Fear Blues Challenge Solo Champion. He is a sought-after soloist known for his evocative takes on rhythm & blues, folk, rock & roll, funk, and roots music.” Lan Nichols President, Cape Fear Blues Society.
See Randy McQuay perform at UNCW Kenan Auditorium on April 18. All Rush Hour Concerts will be at 5:30PM, with $10 tickets for general admission and $5 tickets for all UNCW students with a valid student ID. Tickets can be purchased here: goo.gl/OEb1bd or at Kenan Box Office at 910.962.3500. Beverage and concessions will be available at the performance.... See MoreSee Less
We're absolutely devastated to learn of Walter Bowden's passing. Walt's passion for playing and recording music was undeniable. Low Tide simply wouldn't be what it is today without his direction and expertise throughout the 90s. He also encouraged me to pick up a guitar at 7 years old and gave me the cowboy chords that got me started. 26 years later, its a gift I use and treasure daily. He was my audio engineering mentor for my high school senior project. We spent hours having so much fun, I knew it had to be my calling. To say he had an impact on my life would be the understatement of the century. I will honor his memory and spirit by making music with loved ones. I'm sure that's what he would want. Rest In Peace Wally. ... See MoreSee Less
I'm so sorry, Jim. Sending lots of love to your heart.
This one hurts...well said Jim. He engineered all of Benders practices and produced three songs that we recorded. he also gave me guitar lessons for years. A class act and a great guy that will be missed
Sorry to hear about Walt, he was there to help get Creekside's demo recorded at Low Tide. He was a great guy and was eager to help us get the most out of our project and more importantly explain to us what he was doing so we could do it on our own later. Thank you Walt for taking the time to teach us a little something!
The year so far has seen many new albums released – Tommy Hall & JJ Storniolo’s split, Toke, Randy McQuay, Sean Thomas Gerard, Exploding Math Lab, Jesse Stockton, Astro Cowboy, Louis, Falling for Tuesday, Rebekah Todd & the Odyssey, and handful new songs.
I'm so proud to have been a part of this album and I think I speak for all of us when I say that Wilmington is proud to have Randy McQuay as our ambassador in the IBC!!!"My Kind of Blues" is a 15 track acoustic blues album.
This comes by request of my fans who wanted a "live" experience. I successfully completed that with the help of a few friends.
This album offers a "live" performance with the highest quality engineering, mixing, mastering, photography and design.
"My Kind of Blues" was tracked live in studio (vocals, guitar, harmonica, doubled-bass and footdrums simultaneously!) with additional overdubs on cigarbox guitars and piano on a couple of songs. Richard Welsh also joined me on dobro for a song.
